SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
No. 19 Purdue opened the 2012 season with an overall record of 16-4 after 20-straight road games. They most recently defeated No. 15 Louisville 2-1 in their home opener improving to 17-4 on the year. The Boilermakers earned three wins in the Big Ten / Big East Challenge this year which kicked off the 2012 season. They beat Connecticut, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame all in convincing fashion. Their first setback of the season came at the ECU Keith LeClair Classic when Maryland defeated them by the final score of 11-1.
Purdue won 10-straight after being knocked off by Maryland taking their overall record to 14-1. They split a four-game series with Wichita State and then took 2-of-3 in their Big Ten Conference opener against Ohio State.
Eric Charles holds the best batting average on the team at .398 (35-for-88). Charles has five doubles, a triple and 14 RBI. The Boilermakers have recorded 49 doubles on the year compared to just 23 from their opponents. Six players have five or more doubles as the team leader, Kevin Plawecki, is nationally ranked with 13.
Cameron Perkins and Plawecki each have three home runs on the season, while Stephen Talbott is the team-leader in triples with four. The hard-hitting duo of Perkins and Plawecki has combined for 48 RBI this season.
Purdue can be aggressive on the base paths as the Boilers have stolen 32 bags on 38 attempts. Leading the way for the black and gold is Charles and Talbott with eight each.
Robert Ramer is scheduled to get the start on the mound for Purdue on Wednesday. Ramer is 0-0 on the year with an ERA of 8.10. He has made three appearances this season, including one start. In his 6.2 innings of work, Ramer has allowed six earned runs off eight hits. He has five strikeouts and has shown good control by not walking a single batter.
Purdue leads the nation with a team batting average of .340. They also stand in the top-ten in slugging percentage at .473. Their defense is also solid as they rank fourth overall in double plays per game.
