GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FARGO, N.D. - IPFW freshman Dani Pugh was 3-for-5 with two RBI, and senior Courtney Cronin threw a complete-game two-hitter in the nightcap, as the Mastodons split a Friday afternoon doubleheader with North Dakota State, giving the Bison their first Summit League loss of the season.
IPFW fell 3-0 in the opener, before coming back with a 5-1 win in the nightcap. With the split, IPFW improves to 25-8, and 8-3 in the Summit League, as NDSU goes to 23-12 and 7-1 in league play.
In the opener, the Bison got a career-high strikeout performance from Krista Menke, as the freshman who has earned the last four Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors, struck out 11 IPFW batters, and did not allow a run.
North Dakota State scored once in the first, second, and fourth innings; and held the Mastodons scoreless despite putting runners on second base in each of the first two innings.
The fifth and seventh innings once again saw IPFW put runners on first and second; however, each time the runners were left stranded, as the Mastodons left seven runners on base in the loss.
Dani Pugh was 2-for-3 for IPFW in the game, as Larissa Franklin, Kayti Hanson, and Brittany Kachur had the team's other three hits.
Megan Flenniken picked up the loss for the Mastodons, falling to 7-4 on the season, despite giving up just six hits and two earned runs, while striking out and walking three batters.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons wasted no time in jumping on the scoreboard when IPFW loaded the bases behind three straight walks, and after a force-out at the plate, Pugh singled through the left side, scoring Alex and Ashleigh Bousquet.
IPFW pitcher Courtney Cronin set the first nine NDSU batters down in order in the nightcap, before fourth-inning leadoff hitter Taylor Mortensen hit a solo home run to left field to spoil the perfect game, no-hitter, and shutout bid.
The Mastodon bats remained quiet until the fifth inning when the IPFW offense got to game-two starter Whitney Johnson. A Franklin single was sandwiched between walks to Hanson and Kachur, with the latter of the walks coming from relief pitcher Menke. With the bases loaded Alex Bousquet was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day, and school-record 13th time this season, pushing home Hanson. Ashleigh Bousquet then sent a two-ball, two-strike pitch into center field, scoring Franklin and Kachur, and staking IPFW to a 5-1 lead through five innings.
Cronin, who improved to 13-2 on the season, went the distance in the nightcap, allowing just the two hits, while striking out six and walking none. IPFW's three hits came from three separate batters: Pugh, Franklin, and Ashleigh Bousquet, with Pugh driving in two and Alex Bousquet one.
The teams meet again tomorrow afternoon, with the winner taking an edge in the Summit League standings.
