Mastodons Fall to Boilermakers 4-0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team (11-10) fell to Purdue (10-10) 4-0 on Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Boilermakers earned the early 1-0 lead over the Mastodons in a sweep of the doubles action to start the match off.
At No. 1, the IPFW tandem of Roberto Cabrini and Connor Andrews suffered an 8-2 loss. PU then claimed the No. 2 position over Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang, 8-3, to give the Boilermakers the doubles point. Despite the Boilermakers clinching the doubles point, the No. 3 slot continued play where the Mastodon pair of Junya Saruta and Andres Cobos lost by an 8-4 count.
In singles action, Andrews and Cabrini fell 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and 1, respectively. The Boilermakers clinched the match against the Mastodons when Freitas fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 to give PU the 4-0 team win.
In the unfinished matches, Kang dropped his first set at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, but was up in the second, 1-0, while Cobos suffered a 6-2 defeat in the first set, but was up 2-1 in the second at No. 4. At the No. 6 position, Martin Muadi was leading the first set, 6-3, before the match was halted.
The Mastodons will return to action when they host the IUPUI Jaguars on Friday (April 13) at 3 p.m. in a battle for first place in the Summit League and a chance at the regular season title. The match is also Senior Day for two Mastodons, Roberto Cabrini and Junya Saruta.
