IPFW Battles IUPUI to a 5-2 Win to End the Regular Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the regular season conclusion and Senior Day for Roberto Cabrini and Junya Saruta, the IPFW Mastodons battled the IUPUI Jaguars to a 5-2 win on Friday at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The 'Dons move to 12-10 overall and 4-1 in the Summit League, while the Jags fall to 9-14 overall and suffer their first conference loss of the season for a 4-1 record.

IPFW ruined IUPUI's chance of its second outright conference regular-season title. The two teams are now in a tie for first place in the league's standings. However, UMKC is tied with the two teams in losses, but the Kangaroos still have three matches remaining.

In doubles play, the Mastodon tandem of Saruta and Andres Cobos got IPFW started off on the right foot when they claimed the No. 3 position, 8-3.

However, IUPUI fired back with an 8-6 win at the No. 1 slot over Cabrini and Connor Andrews.

With the doubles point on the line at the No. 2 position, IPFW's pair of Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang earned an 8-3 win for the 'Dons 1-0 lead over the Jags.

In singles action, IPFW started off with two straight-wins at Nos. 1 and 3.

At No. 1, Cabrini had a quick 6-1, 6-3 win, while Cobos gave the Mastodons their third point when he won by a 7-5, 6-3 count at the No. 3 position.

Things started to heat up in the match when IUPUI earned straight wins at Nos. 4 and 6 to move within one of IPFW.

Andrews fell in straight 6-4 sets at No. 4, while Martin Muadi had a hard-fought battle at the No. 6 position but suffered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss.

The 'Dons were able to clinch the win over the Jags when Freitas won at the No. 5 position, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2).

IPFW then finished the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 by Kang.

The Mastodons will return to action when they head to Kansas City, Mo., for the Summit League Championship on April 27-28.
