FORT WAYNE, Ind. --IPFW took an 8-7 lead into the ninth inning, but a three-run home run from Fort Wayne native Grant Yoder pushed Valparaiso to an 11-8 victory. The Mastodons are now 12-28 on the season.
IPFW jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two full innings of play. Valparaiso responded with three runs in the top of the third, but two runs in the bottom of the inning gave the Mastodons a 6-3 edge. Each team scored two runs in the fifth inning, and the Crusaders would cut into the lead by scoring two more in the seventh. Valpo recorded their 19th win of the season by scoring four unanswered runs in the ninth.
Clay Hathaway and Carter DeBoe played great for IPFW in a losing effort. Hathaway went 2-for-6 from the plate with a double and a home run, giving him three RBI's on the day. He also scored two runs. DeBoe also hit a home run in the loss against Valparaiso. He leads the team with six on the season.
Mike Mugg got the start at designated hitter for IPFW. He led off the second inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Steve Danielak followed in the order with a single of his own putting Mugg on second base. A fielder's choice would cut Mugg down at third, but Hathaway came through with a three-run home run to put IPFW out in front.
Malcolm White walked after the homer, and Carter DeBoe reached first after being hit by a pitch. The Crusaders made a pitching change after the DeBoe at-bat sending Ben Mahar to the mound. The Mastodons went for a double steal and were successful as White and DeBoe reached safely. The throw from the catcher ended up in centerfield as DeBoe advanced to third and White came across for the fourth run of the inning.
IPFW added two more runs in the third inning. Danielak singled up the middle as the leadoff man. A Hathaway double to right field moved Danielak to third base and a Malcolm White at-bat advanced both runners. DeBoe also hit a double to right field sending Hathaway home giving the 'Dons a 6-3 advantage.
DeBoe's two-run home run in the fifth would extend the Mastodon lead, but the bullpen couldn't keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard as Valpo came up with two runs in the seventh and four in the ninth.
Kevin Kimball got the start for IPFW. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs off three hits. Kimball struck out two batters and issued three walks. Drew Overman came in for the next 3.1 innings. Overman allowed two earned runs off two hits. He struck out three and walked two. The loss went to Danielak who blew the save in the ninth inning. Danielak was tagged with four earned runs off three hits. The home run from Grant Yoder was the deciding factor as Danielak falls to 3-2 overall on the hill.
IPFW will continue to play at Mastodon Field as the North Dakota State Bison visit for a four-game series this weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m.
