FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The North Dakota State Bison will remain on top of the Summit League standings after defeating the Mastodons by the final score of 8-4. Clay Hathaway led the charge for IPFW with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate.
North Dakota State got off to a quick start by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. IPFW fought back to score a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, and the 'Dons would eventually take a 4-3 lead after scoring three runs in the third inning.
Hathaway jump started the team with a double to right center field in his first at bat of the ballgame. He stole third base and would score the first run of the game for IPFW off a sacrifice fly from Carter DeBoe.
It was Hathaway getting things going offensively once again for IPFW in the third. He became the first base runner of the inning by recording a single to centerfield. A Malcolm White double off the wall in left field allowed Hathaway to score from first base cutting the lead to 3-2. DeBoe followed White in the lineup and delivered a double to right center field which sent White to the dish. IPFW gained the lead after Shane Trevino came up with the third double of the inning which just stayed fair down the right field line. DeBoe scored the go ahead run making the score 4-3.
North Dakota State rebounded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and three more in the top of the fifth. Each team ended the game with nine hits, but the Mastodons hurt their chances of winning the game by committing seven errors on the day.
Chuck Weaver got the start for IPFW on the mound. Weaver took the loss after winning his last two starts against Oakland and Southern Utah. Weaver threw seven full innings against the Bison and recorded four strikeouts. Nate White finished off the final two innings for IPFW. White did a nice job out of the bullpen as he did not give up any hits.
These two teams will face off in a doubleheader tomorrow at Mastodon Field. Game one will begin at noon.
