MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Relief pitcher Courtney Cronin picked up pair of saves, while knocking in four runs including a two-run home run in game two of the doubleheader, as the IPFW Mastodons swept the Central Michigan Chippewas by scores of 6-4 and 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, IPFW improves to 37-11 on the season, and 11-1 against teams from the Mid-American Conference.
Ashleigh Bousquet went 4-for-8 on the day for the 'Dons, scoring three times, while Kayti Hanson was 3-for-5, and Cronin 3-for-7 with four runs driven in.
In the opener, the 'Dons and Chippewas played to a pitcher's duel through the first three and a half innings, before the hosts erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take its first and only lead of the day.
The Mastodons answered back quickly, starting when Audrey Mintari was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. She was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, before scoring when Larissa Franklin reached on a throwing error, cutting the gap to 4-1. Brittany Kachur followed with an RBI single that scored Franklin, as Alex Bousquet came through with a single that plated Kachur. Ashleigh Bousquet then doubled home her sister, before Cronin picked up the team's fourth straight hit, a single off of the top of the center field wall that scored Bousquet, and gave the 'Dons the 5-4 lead.
IPFW added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Cronin doubled again to center field, scoring Alex Bousquet, before Cronin set the side down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Four players, Franklin, Alex Bousquet, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Cronin each went 2-for-4, with Alex Bousquet scoring twice, and Cronin driving in a pair. Miranda Kramer picked up the win, improving to 11-3 on the year, pitching the first four innings, striking out eight, giving up five hits and four earned runs. Cronin got the save, pitching three innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one in picking up her third save of the year.
The second game saw the 'Dons bust out for five runs in the top of the second inning, never trailing in the two-run win.
The second frame started with an Ashleigh Bousquet triple to right-center field, before Cronin followed with her team-leading eighth home run of the year over the left field wall. Mintari, who was hit by a pitch for the third time of the day, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, before scoring on a Hanson double down the left field line. Hanson scored on a fielding error by the Chippewa third baseman, before Franklin scored when Kachur doubled to deep left field, giving the 'Dons a 5-0 lead.
The Chippewas twice chipped into the lead with sacrifice flies, taking the margin to three at 5-2, before a Megan Flenniken bases-loaded walk, and was followed by an RBI single from Cassie Wolfe that scored Cronin.
A three-run home run cut the gap to two at 7-5, before Cronin came in to close the door for the second game in as many games.
Hanson was 2-for-3 in the game, while Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-4, while Bousquet and Cronin scored twice while driving in two.
Flenniken improved to 10-6 with the win, pitching the first five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out two, and giving up four earned runs. Cronin went the final inning and a third, giving up just one hit and striking out three.
