INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW softball team swept the opening two games of a three-game series with the IUPUI Jaguars, as Ashleigh Bousquet erupted for three home runs in the opener, before scoring three times in the finale, as the Mastodons took both ends of the double header by scores of 7-1 and 9-4.
With the sweep, IPFW Improves to 39-11 overall, and 14-6 in Summit League play. The pair of wins, coupled with Western Illinois two losses to South Dakota, has pushed IPFW into second place in the league standings, a game behind current league front-runner North Dakota State.
Bousquet's three home runs in the first game, which came off of three different pitchers, tied the single-game school record, and is the third-most single-game home runs in NCAA history, behind four from Rebecca Magett of Hampton in April 2010, and Jill Iacono of Canisius in 2002, and ties the record set by Kristina Karpun against UMKC on March 12, 2010.
Additionally, Bousquet's 13 total bases are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in NCAA history. The seven RBI give her 56 on the season, three away from tying the Summit League single-season record of 59 held by Melissa Chmielewski of North Dakota State (2010), Karen Stewart of DePaul (1998), and Missy Nowak, also of DePaul (1993).
Game one starting pitcher Miranda Kramer was spectacular in the circle, striking out a career-high-tying 11 batters, scattering two hits, and allowing just one unearned run.
The Mastodons struck quickly in the opener, when Larissa Franklin walked before Bousquet singled to right field, her only non-home run hit of the game, giving the Mastodons a 1-0 advantage.
The next inning and a half went scoreless before Alex Bousquet drew a walk, setting the table for her sister's first home run, this one off of Jocelyn Oppenhuis, taking the IPFW lead to 3-0 in the third inning.
Another inning and a half of scoreless softball, the Bousquet's once again teamed up for two runs when Alex singled before Ashleigh homered to left-center field off of Emilli Escamilla, pushing the Mastodon lead to 5-0.
The host Jaguars put up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, snapping the shutout bid, before Ashleigh Bousquet came through again, scoring herself and Brittany Kachur with her third home run, off of Samantha Bumbaugh, taking the IPFW lead to 7-1. Neither team would score again, as the 'Dons held on the for the six-run victory.
Ashleigh Bousquet was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with the three runs scored and seven RBI. Alex Bouquet scored twice, while Franklin and Kachur each crossed the plate once.
The Jaguars scored first in the nightcap with a second-inning home run from Eryn Dillon, as the Mastodons left the bases loaded in the first and second innings.
Audrey Mintari tied the game at one with a sacrifice squeeze bunt that scored Ashleigh Bousquet, setting the stage for a Kayti Hanson single that scored game two starting pitcher Megan Flenniken.
Flenniken set the side down in order in the bottom of the third, before seeing the 'Dons score five runs in the top of the fourth inning. The opening score came when Franklin crossed the plate on a wild pitch, before Courtney Cronin doubled home Kachur two batters later. A Flenniken infield single chased in Ashleigh Bousquet, as Hanson and Jessica Haskins followed with RBI's to give the 'Dons a 7-1 lead.
IUPUI's Leah Prewitt hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to three at 7-4 before Mintari drove in two more runs with a single up the middle that scored Alex and Ashleigh Bousquet, taking the margin to five at 9-4 halfway through the fifth inning. Neither team would score during the last two and a half innings, and the 'Dons were able to secure the series win over the Jaguars.
Each of IPFW's nine players that had an official plate appearance had at least one hit, with Franklin, Alex Bousquet, Flenniken, and Hanson each going 2-for-4, with Mintari driving in three and Hanson two. Ashleigh Bousquet scored three times, despite not having an official plate appearance, drawing five free passes on three walks and being hit by two pitches after her monster performance in the opener.
Cronin picked up the win in the nightcap, improving to 17-2 on the year after pitching the final three and two-thirds of an inning, scattering three hits and striking out two. Starting pitcher Flenniken went three and a third inning, striking out three and giving up four runs.
IUPUI starting pitcher Nikki Thomas went the distance for the Jaguars, giving up a dozen hits and nine runs, while walking eight and striking out three.
The teams return to action in a noon first pitch at the IUPUI Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.
