SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons, behind a school-record 37 wins this season, have four starting lineup regulars batting over .300 this year, while seeing all three pitchers reach double-figure wins for the first time in school history.
Alex Bousquet leads the hitting parade for IPFW, as she bats .373 while leading the team in runs scored (42), walks (30), times hit by pitch (21), slugging percentage (.597), and on-base percentage (.543), and has reached base safely in each of her last 24 games. Larissa Franklin bats .358 from her leadoff spot, and has scored 35 times, and leads the team with a school-record 21 stolen bases on the year.
Brittany Kachur bats .355 with 16 runs scored and five doubles, reaching base 40 percent of the time she comes up, as Ashleigh Bousquet is batting .325, with a conference-leading 49 RBI's (also a single-season school record), and has scored 25 times while walking 22 times.
The pitching staff, which has three 10-win pitchers, is led by Courtney Cronin, who is 16-2 on the year with a 1.28 ERA, and a conference-leading four saves. Megan Flenniken and Miranda Kramer are 10-6 and 11-3, with ERA's of 1.83 and 2.03, respectively. Cronin leads the trio with 106 strikeouts in 131.2 innings of work, while Kramer (98 in 89.2 innings) and Flenniken (93 in 103.0 innings) are each closing in on the 100-strikeout plateau.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
IUPUI comes into the conference weekend having won four of its last six games, including a two-game sweep of Eastern Illinois by scores of 3-2 and 1-0.
The Jaguars this season have been paced by their pitching staff, which includes Nikki Thomas and Jocelyn Oppenhuis, who are 8-14 and 6-12 this season, respectively. Thomas has a 2.68 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 135.2 innings, while Oppenhuis has a 2.81 ERA and 103 whiffs in 127.0 innings of work.
Offensively Nicole Checkie is the team leader in batting average, hitting .314 with 19 runs scored and a dozen RBI, while Ashley Seering is close the .300 pace at .288. Jenny Royse leads the team in runs (21), home runs (4), and RBI (21). The Jaguars are speedy once they reach the basepaths, as the team is 65-of-85 on stolen base attempts, including 13 steals from Seering, 12 from Checkie, and 11 from Eryn Dillon (.238 batting average).
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Mastodons hold a slim 12-11 lead in the all-time series between the two teams, and have dominated the series lately, having won 11 of the last 13 meetings. IUPUI jumped ahead early in the series, winning nine of the first 10 games between the two teams, before IPFW righted the ship, including back-to-back series sweeps in Summit League play in 2008 and 2009. The Jaguars picked up one win in the series in each of the last two seasons, each by just one run.
BIG MAC
This season the Mastodons faced six teams from the Mid-American Conference, and more than held their own, going a combined 11-1 in those games, sweeping Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, and Central Michigan, with the only blemish coming from league-leading Bowling Green, who split a two-game series with the 'Dons in Fort Wayne.
CAREER MARKER
IPFW pitcher Courtney Cronin has climbed into the top-15 in nearly every Summit League career statistic this season. She currently ranks fourth in wins (61), fourth in saves (8), fourth in shutouts (28), tied for sixth in number of games started (95), eighth in strikeouts (517), eighth in appearances (116), ninth in complete games (66), 10th in innings (588.0), 11th in winning percentage (.678), 13th in ERA (1.82).
HIGH WINS
The 37 wins this season for IPFW mark a new program high-water mark, as the previous school record was 29 from the 2010 season. There have now been five seasons at IPFW where a Mastodon softball squad has had 20 or more wins, including 28 last season, 24 in 1994, and 22 in 1993.
COACHING WIN
With her success over the last three seasons, IPFW head coach Amy Tudor has accrued a 94-45-1 record (.675 win percentage), which gives her the second-most career wins in school history, in addition to the highest winning percentage of any of the five IPFW head softball coaches.
