BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons won their sixth straight match in convincing fashion, 5-2 over the Valparaiso Crusaders, IPFW's first win over their in-state foes.
The win improves IPFW to 11-8 on the season, a win away from a guaranteed winning season, while Valparaiso falls to 6-10.
IPFW's win streak started after a March 10 loss to Bradley and began with a March 11 win against Cleveland State, and has stretched five home games, as IPFW now stands 7-1 on its home courts.
In doubles action to start the match, the No. 1 team of Roberto Cabrini and Connor Andrews quickly dispatched of their opponents 8-1. Andres Cobos and Junya Saruta took a bit longer; however, still brought home an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, giving IPFW the point in the category. The No. 2 team of Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang fell behind 5-0 early in their match, but fought back, tying the score at 5-5, 6-6, and 7-7 but fell in the tiebreaker, losing 8-7.
Valparaiso came back and knotted the overall match score with a win at No. 4 singles, before the Mastodons won the next four singles matches, the first two at No. 6 by Martin Muadi (6-2, 6-2) and No. 5 by Freitas (6-0, 6-3).
Cobos, who earlier in the day was named the Summit League Player of the Week, then claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, merely minutes before No. 1 player Cabrini completed his straight-set win 6-2, 6-2. Valparaiso took the sixth and final singles match of the day, but the match had already been determined, as IPFW fell at No. 2 singles.
The Mastodons next hit the road for a match at UMKC on Saturday, April 7, as the Kangaroos are currently 0-1 in the Summit League, and a win would put IPFW into a tie for first place in the league standings, with an April 13 match at home against current leader IUPUI.
