Final Results vs. Grace
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's tennis team faced Cleveland State at 10 a.m. this morning and then ended the day with a 7 p.m. match vs. Grace. The 'Dons fell to the Vikings 2-5, but came back to defeat Grace 7-0 to put their overall record at 1-4.
The Mastodons got off to a fast start in doubles competition against Cleveland State as they won the point after winning two of the three matches. Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi took down Nolan Marks and Joe Vanmeter 8-2 in No. 2 Doubles and the team of Gerard Guell and Andres Cobos secured the victory by winning 8-6 over Matt Kuelker and Matt Ford in No. 3 Doubles.
Singles competition against the Vikings didn't go as well as Martin Muadi was the only IPFW player to record a win. Muadi defeated Nolan Marks 6-0, 6-3 in No. 6 Singles. The Mastodons almost recorded a win in No. 1 Singles as Daniel Kang battled with Jorge VanDer Vloet, but Kang couldn't hold on as the Vikings won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
“We came out with great energy and played great at No. 1 and No. 3 to win the doubles point,” Assistant Coach Brett Barnet explained. “Andres and Gerard fought hard from a break down to deliver us the point and an 8-6 win. We started slow at a couple spots in singles and had a hard time coming back in the matches. Martin played great in his win and Dan was a little unlucky at the end of his match to not finish off a very good opponent. The guys fought and nearly came back but credit to CSU for playing good singles.”
The nightcap was all IPFW as they dominated the match both in singles and doubles competition. Andres Cobos and Gerard Guell was the first doubles team to finish as they quickly won 8-2. The duo of Muadi and Andrews were close behind taking an 8-2 win in No. 2 Doubles. Kang and Freitas completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over Michael Blevins and Daniel Sanchez in No. 1 Doubles.
The Mastodons swept Grace in singles play as Kang took a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 Singles. Andrews defeated Jack Wang in No. 2 Singles by the exact same scores.
Cobos knocked off Sanchez in No. 3 Singles 6-2, 6-0 and it was Guell who won No. 4 Singles 6-2, 6-1. No. 5 and No. 6 Singles were the first two matches to end as Muadi dominated Josiah Shafer 6-0, 6-0 and Freitas defeated Ethan Grove 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 Singles.
“I was very pleased with our focus from start to finish tonight,” Barnett added. “We came out very intense and took care of business. I hope we can build on this effort as we have a difficult road match at Wright State next weekend.”
The IPFW men's tennis team will return to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 10 with a match at Wright State. Competition will begin at 3 p.m.
