HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The IPFW men's baseball team fell to 1-1 on the year after losing 11-6 against Morehead State on Saturday afternoon. Poor weather conditions moved the scheduled doubleheader to Sunday which moved the Morehead State game to Saturday.
IPFW scored two runs in the bottom of the second, fifth, and sixth innings, but it wasn't enough as Morehead State drove in 11 runs off 15 hits. They scored eight runs through four innings while adding two in the seventh and one more in the ninth.
Chuck Weaver was hit with the loss on Saturday. Weaver threw four full innings and struck out five batters. Seven of the eight runs that he gave up were earned. Nate White and Zach Kayser also spent time on the mound Saturday. White threw three innings while Kayser came in for the final two.
Clay Hathaway put IPFW on the scoreboard by leading off the second inning with a triple. He made his way to home plate after an error from the Morehead State third baseman. The second run of the inning was scored by Caleb Fenimore. He scored an unearned run off an RBI single from Evan VanSumeren.
Back-to-back singles in the fifth inning put two more runs on the scoreboard for IPFW. Kristian Gayday singled to left centerfield and Steve Lowden followed him in the lineup with his only hit of the day. Morehead State walked Shane Trevino and Clay Hathaway to push one run across and a sacrifice fly from Fenimore made the score 8-4.
The sixth inning got a little wild as Malcolm White drew a walk and then Morehead State hit VanSumeren and Gayday to load the bases. After a pitching change Trevino came up with an RBI single that scored White and a fielder's choice from Hathaway allowed VanSumeren to score.
