
Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The IPFW baseball team is 2-2 overall after opening weekend. The Mastodons lost 7-6 to Alabama A&M in game one on Sunday, but came back to record a 7-6 win over the Bulldogs in the nightcap.
The first game went 10 innings and game two of the doubleheader was over after seven. Brandon Pease took the mound in the first game. He threw 5.2 innings and struck out five. Newcomer Connor Lawhead finished the game for IPFW. Lawhead struck out four batters and only allowed four hits.
IPFW scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning and opened up a 3-0 lead after adding two more in the fourth. Alabama A&M scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the lead. Each team added two runs in the eighth and IPFW tied the game late with a run in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth.
The Mastodons ended the game with 15 hits compared to just 10 for Alabama A&M. IPFW did however commit four errors.
IPFW got out to a 1-0 lead after an RBI single from Steve Lowden in the first inning. The Mastodons tacked on two more in the fourth as Markus Kalber got things going with a two out double. Tyler Shepherd sent two runners in with a triple that increased the lead to 3-0.
Hathaway came up with a two-RBI double in the eighth inning and the 'Dons pushed the game to extra innings as Evan VanSumeren singled to send Kalber to the dish. IPFW couldn't produce a run in the 10th and the Bulldogs grabbed the win off an RBI single.
The second game was entertaining from the very start as the Mastodons scored five runs in the first two innings. Malcolm White scored the first run of the game off an error and then the 'Dons exploded with four runs in the second inning.
Shane Trevino led the charge with a leadoff homerun in the second. Brandon Soat got involved with an RBI single and aggressive base running was the cause for the third run as Malcolm White made it home on a double steal. The final run of the inning came after a Kristian Gayday double.
Each team scored two runs in the fifth and the Bulldogs cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Trevino and Kalber each doubled in the fifth and Reboulet came in to finish off Alabama A&M by pitching the last two innings of the game for the save. Steve Danielak got the win as he struck out two batters in four innings of work.
