MARTIN, Tenn. – IPFW took a tough 5-4 loss at UT Martin on Saturday afternoon. The Mastodons are now 2-3 early in the 2013 season.
Steve Lowden and Clay Hathaway each recorded two hits against the Skyhawks on Saturday. Lowden was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Hathaway was 2-for-4 with an RBI. IPFW recorded four doubles on the day as that duo along with Shane Trevino and Markus Kalber provided the team with offense.
UT Martin took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The 'Dons quickly tied the game in the top of the third, but the Skyhawks added a run in the bottom of the inning to regain a slim margin. The scoreboard moved to 4-2 after the fourth inning, but the Mastodons tacked on two in the top of the sixth. Two runs wouldn't be enough however as UT Martin scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Each team ended the game with eight hits. Jason Kalber surrendered seven hits in four innings as he got the starting nod on the mound. He gave up four earned runs and struck out four. Danny Tursell came in for IPFW out of the bullpen for the final four innings of action. He only gave up one hit, yet it generated a run as he was tagged with the loss. Tursell is now 1-1 on the year.
After giving up two runs in the first inning it was a one out double from Lowden that got things moving for IPFW. Trevino picked up an early RBI with his double to right center that sent Lowden around to score the first run of the game for the 'Dons.
M. Kalber led off the third inning with single to left field, but he was sent back to the dugout after being caught trying to steal second. Malcolm White drew a walk after the putout and advanced to third base after a single from Tyler Shepherd. A double steal sent Shepherd to second and White to the plate to tie the game at 2-2.
The sixth inning was the deciding factor on Saturday as the 'Dons scored two runs to get back into the game, but UT Martin countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to pull out the win.
After a pitching change Gayday reached first after being walked and Lowden singled to center field which allowed Gayday to advance to third. Hathaway's RBI double to right sent Gayday home and also moved Lowden into scoring position at third. Lowden would come home to score on a passed ball, but a leadoff double from the Skyhawks swung the momentum as UT Martin would hang on for the win.
These two teams will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
