MARTIN, Tenn. – The IPFW baseball team is now 2-5 overall after taking two one-run losses at UT-Martin on Sunday afternoon. The Mastodons played a doubleheader at Skyhawk field and came up short 1-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
IPFW recorded seven hits in the first game, but was unable to generate a run. The Skyhawks led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double down the left field line and a single would follow moving the runner to third base. The game-winning run came across home plate after a sacrifice fly to right field.
Chuck Weaver was on the mound for IPFW in game one. He threw six full innings and recorded four strikeouts. Weaver surrendered four hits, but didn't walk a single batter. Connor Lawhead was tagged with the loss on Sunday as he threw the final two innings of the game. Lawhead struck out three, walked one and allowed one earned run off three hits.
Markus Kalber was once again in the zone for IPFW as he finished the game 4-for-4 with a double. He now has seven doubles through the first two weekends of the season.
Game two was scheduled for seven innings and the Skyhawks came back late to record three runs in the bottom of the sixth to record the win.
IPFW scored a run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth, but the late surge from UT Martin was enough to escape with the 4-3 win. The Skyhawks ended the game with eight hits compared to just two from IPFW.
A solo homerun broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning as UT Martin jumped out in front 1-0.
The Mastodons got aggressive on the base paths to record their first run of the ballgame. Brandon Soat walked to lead off the third inning and he stole second after a UT Martin pitching change. Soat ended up on third base after a failed pickoff attempt and he scored the first run of the game for IPFW after another UT Martin error.
The Don's grabbed control of the game after Shane Trevino blasted a two-run shot over the fence in right field. They held on to the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.
The bottom of the sixth started off great as the first two batters of the inning struck out swinging. A pinch hitter kept the Skyhawks alive with a two-out double down the right field line. Another double followed as UT Martin cut the IPFW lead to 3-2.
An RBI single tied the game at 3-3, and the third double of the inning gave UT Martin a come from behind 4-3 victory.
Brandon Pease threw the first four innings of the game and Steve Danielak was hit with the loss throwing the final two innings. Pease struck out three and only allowed four hits. Danielak started strong as he recorded four strikeouts, but a sting of doubles in the bottom of the sixth handed him his first loss of the season.
