UT ARLINGTON BOX | TROY BOX
LUBBOCK, Texas - Behind a 5-for-7 day at the plate from sophomore Larissa Franklin, the IPFW Mastodon softball split a doubleheader, falling 12-4 to the UT Arlington Mavericks, before evening the record with a 5-4 win over Troy.
Franklin batted .714 on the day, while Dani Pugh hit .667 (4-of-6), and Alex Bousquet .429 (3-of-7). Alex Bousquet drove in a team-high three runs, while scoring three times herself.
After a scoreless first inning, UT Arlington rattled off two runs in the bottom of the second inning, before IPFW cut the gap in half when Ashleigh Bousquet scored on a fielding error by the Mustang right fielder.
UT Arlington scored twice more in the bottom of the third, and seven times in the bottom of the fourth, running ahead to a 11-1 lead.
In their final chance to keep the game alive, IPFW scored two in the top of the fifth inning on an Alex Bousquet two-run home run, but that would be all IPFW could get as UT Arlington took the five-inning, 11-3 win.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-3, with IPFW's six other hits coming from six different batters, as all three of the Mastodon runs came from different players. Megan Flenniken picked up the loss, pitching three innings and giving up just one earned run and five hits.
Against Troy, the Mastodons scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, and never trailed in the game. Brittany Kachur opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored Franklin, before Pugh doubled home Alex Bousquet.
A run in the second inning came when Audrey Mintari hit a home run to right field, before IPFW scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth, the first run coming when Alex Bousquet singled home Franklin, before being chased home on a Pugh single.
Troy scored four times in the top of the fifth inning; however, they left the bases loaded.
The Trojans could not score in either the sixth or seventh innings, as the Mastodons held on for the 5-4 victory.
Franklin was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the win, while Pugh was 3-for-4, and Alex Bousquet 2-for-4. Franklin and Alex Bousquet each scored twice, while Pugh drove in a pair.
Flenniken evened her season record at 3-3 in picking up the win, striking out six while scattering seven hits in the win.
The Mastodons return home for their first home games of the 2013 season when the squad hosts the Kansas City Kangaroos in a 1 p.m. first pitch.
