Summit League Action Begins for Women’s Tennis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's tennis team will travel to Kansas City for the first league cluster matches of the season. The Mastodons will face Western Illinois and South Dakota State on Thursday, March 14 and end the weekend with games against Omaha on Friday and at Kansas City on Saturday.
IPFW is 11-7 overall after sweeping Green Bay and Bradley 7-0 last weekend. Caterina Kiefer picked up her second Summit League Player of the Week honor by going 4-0 with two single wins at No. 2 and two double wins at No. 1.
The Mastodons have won five straight heading into the weekend. Nearly every player on the team has a winning record in singles competition. Doubles play has also been strong so far this season and the 'Dons post a 40-14 record.
Miloslava Shustova is 16-2 in singles play and Marcy Huck is 12-6. Anita Henestrosa and Kiefer represent IPFW in No.1 and No. 2 Singles. Henestrosa is 11-6 overall and Kiefer is 11-4.
SCOUTING WESTERN ILLINOIS
The Leathernecks have not won a match this season as they come into Summit League play with an overall record of 0-8. Seven of Western Illinois' eight matches have been sweeps (7-0). The team most recently lost 2-5 versus Northern Iowa on March 2.
Kristen Havelka is the only Leatherneck to win a match for Western Illinois is singles competition. She is 1-7 on the year after defeating Trisha Hinke of Northern Iowa in No. 5 Singles 6-2,6-3.
SCOUTING SOUTH DATKOA STATE
The Jackrabbits enter the weekend with an 8-7 record by winning three out of their last four matches. SDSU defeated Ohio Dominican 4-3 and Presbyterian 5-2 before taking a 1-6 loss to St. Joseph's (Pa.). They ended the Florida trip with a 6-1 win over Florida A&M on Friday, March 8.
Ffion Davies is the top singles player on the roster as she comes into the cluster with a 12-3 record. Tacy Haws-Lay is 8-5 and Beatriz Souza is 8-7. The team of Jenny Blackburne and Davies is 10-5 in doubles action and the tandem of Florencia Magni and Souza is 8-1.
SCOUTING OMAHA
Omaha only has six matches under their belt as they post a 2-4 record on the year. They started off 2-0 with wins over Nebraska Wesleyan and North Dakota, but they have lost four straight. Three of the four matches were 0-7 losses. The team most recently lost on March 3 versus Drake.
No Maverick has more than two wins in singles play. Jacqueline Baude, Molly Matricardi, Emily Pierson, and Alex Tran all have two. Tran plays at No. 1 and it's Matricardi who represents Omaha at No. 2.
SCOUTING KANSAS CITY
The Kangaroos are 3-10 thus far in the season and are currently on a four-match losing streak. UMKC picked up back-to-back wins in early February defeating Drake 4-3 and SIUE 4-1. Their most recent win came against Central Arkansas.
Dimitra Stavrianakou is the top singles player on the team with an overall record of 10-8. Stavrianakou has a 5-5 mark at No. 3 Singles and a 3-0 record at No. 4 Singles.
