KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The IPFW women's tennis team won two matches on day one of the Summit League cluster hosted by Kansas City. The Mastodons easily defeated Western Illinois 7-0 early and then they returned to the court to record a 6-1 victory over South Dakota State.
IPFW swept Western Illinois in the first match of the day. Doubles competition finished in order as Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer defeated the Leathernecks in No. 1 Doubles 8-0. Miloslava Shustova and Theresa Neumeyr gave IPFW the doubles point with an 8-1 win in No. 2 Doubles and the tandem of Sonya Sorokina and Marcy Huck also recorded an 8-1 victory in No. 3 Doubles.
The Mastodons completely dominated singles play against Western Illinois. Henestrosa, Neumeyr, and Sorokina all won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Kiefer and Huck each recorded 6-1, 6-0 victories and Shustova rounded out the effort in No. 3 Singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Doubles play was once again all IPFW in the afternoon match as the 'Dons won No. 1 Doubles 8-2. The No. 3 team also won 8-2, but this time Huck teamed with Kristine Lindal. The final doubles match to finish was Shustova and Neumeyr in No. 2. They ended up winning 8-6.
Lindal took over No. 2 Singles against the Jackrabbits and she responded by winning 6-3, 7-5. Henestrosa took No. 1 Singles 6-4, 6-2 and Kiefer was victorious in No. 3 Singles 6-2, 7-5.
Other winners on Thursday afternoon included Shustova in No. 4 Singles with a 6-3, 6-2 edge and Neumeyr in No. 6 Singles 6-3, 6-0.
