Men's Tennis Splits Saturday Matches

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Trine Thunder 7-0, before falling 5-2 to the Toledo Rockets, with both matches played at the Pine Valley Raquet Club.

Against Trine, the Mastodons gave up just four total games in the three matches, with the No. 2 doubles team of Connor Andrews and Gerrard Guell finishing first with an 8-0 sweep. The No. 1 doubles grouping of Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos secured the IPFW doubles point with an 8-2 win, before Alfonso Costas and Jeremy DePree closed out at No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 score.

The Mastodons shut out Trine through the match decision, as Martin Muadi (No. 4), Kang (No. 2), and Derek Romer (No. 6) each won via a 6-0, 6-0 sweep to secure the match victory for IPFW. Joao Freitas won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, with Cobos winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 and Andrews a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 to close out the sweep.

In the evening match against Toledo, the Rockets swept through the doubles matches, as Andrews and Muadi fell 8-2 at No. 2, Romer and Cobos fell 8-4 at No. 3, before Kang and Freitas were defeated 8-6 at No. 1.

The Rockets took the first three finals of the singles competition, with Andrews falling at No. 2, Muadi at No. 5, and Kang at No. 1.

With the score 4-0 in favor of the Rockets, the Mastodons got their first win of the competition when Guell won 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 at No. 6 singles. Cobos followed with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win at No. 3 singles, before Freitas fell in a marathon-length 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 loss at No. 4 singles.

The split moved IPFW to 5-11 on the season. The squad returns to action on April 3, when the squad travels to Valparaiso, Ind. to compete against the Crusaders starting at 4 p.m.
