Alabama State used 10 pitchers on the mound against IPFW. The Mastodons countered by rotating four players on the mound with Brandon Pease throwing the first three innings. Pease gave up eight hits which turned into six runs, but the bullpen was solid keeping the Mastodons on top.
Kyle Sorensen, Connor McLaughlin and Travis Reboulet all saw time on the mound for IPFW. Sorensen allowed two runs in 2.2 innings of work. McLaughlin and Reboulet shut down the Hornet bats as IPFW held on for the win. Sorensen got the win, he is now 1-0 overall.
Malcolm White led off the game with a walk and Tyler Shepherd got the game going with a single to right. An error on the next play allowed White to score, Shepherd to move to third and Kristian Gayday to reach base.
A fielder's choice sent Gayday to the dugout, but Shepherd came in to score the second run of the game. Clay Hathaway reached first off a bunt and Evan VanSumeren singled to right to move the runners. Fenimore's first double of the game was a three-RBI shot to right center field. The Mastodons opened up a 5-0 lead, but the Hornets chipped away with two in the bottom of the inning.
Lowden recorded an RBI single in the second inning, but Alabama State quickly tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the third.
IPFW tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth. Gayday, Lowden and Hathaway all singled to start the inning. VanSumeren drew a walk to score the first run of the inning and also kept the bases loaded. A pitching change gave Alabama State their first out of the inning, but it was Fenimore again that came up huge for IPFW with a two RBI double to left center field. The final run of the inning came on a passed ball.
The Mastodons will return to the field on March 27 when they travel to Purdue to face the Boilermakers at 5 p.m.
