Mastodons Stay Undefeated in League Play

BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – The IPFW women's tennis team defeated IUPUI and Oakland on Thursday improving their overall record to 17-7. The Mastodons took the first match 4-0 over the Jaguars and ended the day with another 4-0 victory over the Golden Grizzlies.
“The girls fought hard today,” Head Coach Eric Burns explained. “Oakland is a much improved team, but we fought hard for our points and it paid off. All of the close matches early in the season helped prepare us for close tough matches. I'm really proud of our effort.”
IPFW recorded a 4-0 win over IUPUI in the morning as the Mastodons swept doubles competition and then ended the match early with wins in No. 1 No. 2 and No. 5 Singles.
Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer came out on top in No. 1 Doubles by defeating Shelby Hullett and Bobbi Modesto by the final score of 8-2. The final two matches of doubles competition also ended in 8-2 victories for the Mastodons as Miloslava Shustova and Theresa Neumeyr won No. 2 Doubles and the tandem of Kristine Lindal and Marcy Huck came out on top in No. 3 Doubles.
Henestrosa and Kiefer made quick work of their opponents in singles play as Henestrosa picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win for IPFW in No. 1 Singles and Kiefer put IPFW up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 2 Singles.
The match officially ended with Neumeyr defeating Rachael Bridgegroom 6-4, 6-1 in No. 5 Singles.
The Oakland match was very similar as IPFW won the doubles point after wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 teams. The No. 1 team was also ahead 7-4. No changes were made to the lineup in the doubles competition against Oakland.
Singles play ended with Henestrosa winning No. 1 Singles, Shustova winning No. 4 Singles and Huck wrapping up the match with a win in No. 6 Singles.
Henestrosa's opponent was unable to finish and left with an injury which resulted in a win for IPFW. Shustova held on for an early 7-6 (4) win and then finished off her opponent in the second set 6-3. Huck also had a tough match, but she pulled out a close 7-5 win followed by a 6-2 victory which sealed the win for IPFW.
The Mastodons are now 6-0 in Summit League competition. They will face South Dakota tomorrow at 2 p.m. to end the second cluster of the season.
