
Women’s Tennis Goes Undefeated in Summit League Action

BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – The IPFW women's tennis team defeated South Dakota 4-0 today at the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness club. The Mastodons are now a perfect 7-0 in Summit League play and 18-7 overall.
With the win over South Dakota, the Mastodons became regular season Summit League Champions for the fourth time in a five year span. They will enter the Summit League Tournament as the top seed.
"I am really proud of our team," Head Coach Eric Burns explained. "We have taken everyone's best shot and we made it through undefeated and we have recovered well from our 6-7 start with 12 straight wins. I am very pleased with how we have responded and we will continue to work to prepare for the tournament."
Friday's match was all IPFW as the Mastodons dominated doubles competition to earn the first point of the day. Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer finished first in No. 1 Doubles with an 8-1 win and the point went to IPFW after Kristine Lindal and Marcy Huck defeated Veronika Makashov and Nina Barudzic in No. 3 Doubles 8-2.
The top of the lineup was strong again on Friday as Henestrosa and Kiefer each won giving IPFW the early edge. Henestrosa took a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Kiefer was on fire with a 6-0, 6-0 finish. The match came to an end with Miloslava Shustova defeating Barudzic 6-4, 6-3 in No. 4 Singles.
The Mastodons have three matches remaining on the schedule, two at home and one on the road. The team will use that time to prepare for the Summit League Championships which will take place April 26-27.
