Game One Box Score
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team picked up a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field. Game two of the doubleheader came to a halt after six full innings with IPFW leading 5-4. The game will resume tomorrow before the start of the doubleheader.
Clay Hathaway had a monster game in the opener going 3-for-3 from the plate with three RBI's and a run scored. Caleb Fenimore was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Kristian Gayday ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Oakland got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Grizzlies played as the home team even though IPFW hosted. The Mastodons will play as the home team on Sunday.
IPFW cut into the lead with a run in the top of the second inning as the Mastodons took advantage of an Oakland error which ended with Steve Lowden standing on third base. Hathaway recorded his first RBI of the day with sacrifice fly to deep right field.
IPFW tied the game in the top of the fourth and each team added two runs in the fifth. The difference maker in game one came in the top of the seventh for the Mastodons as Gayday scored the game-winning run off a Hathaway single.
Hathaway impacted the fourth inning with a lead-off triple. He would score off a Fenimore single to tie the game at 2-2. The two-run fifth inning got started with a two-out single back up the middle of the field for Gayday. Gayday stole second and moved to third on a Steve Lowden single through the left side. Lowden stole second and advanced to third on a base hit from Hathaway. Gayday scored on the play and Lowden quickly followed him on a Fenimore single.
The middle of the order came back to hurt Oakland in the seventh as Gayday led off with a single. Two wild pitches would move Gayday to third base and Hathaway supplied IPFW with the game-winning hit with a shot to centerfield.
The Mastodons opened up a 5-0 lead in game two, but the Grizzlies came back with four unanswered runs before the two teams ran out of sunlight. The game will pick up tomorrow at 11 a.m. followed by the scheduled doubleheader.
