FORT WAYNE, Ind. - With the match tied 3-3, and all eyes on the No. 6 singles court, IPFW sophomore Marcy Huck came up huge in her biggest collegiate match, out-lasting Amelie Amsallem of Kansas City 6-2 in the deciding third set to bring home the team's third Summit League Tournament Championship in the past four seasons.
The win gives the Mastodons a sweep of the Summit League Regular Season and Tournament Titles for the third time in a four-year span, and advances the team to the NCAA Tournament, which will be held from May 10-12 at on-campus sites.
The Mastodons dominated early in the match, quickly taking the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles from Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer, followed by an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles by Huck and Kristine Lindal, giving the Mastodons the crucial doubles point.
Kansas City struck first in singles, as No. 1 player Laura Bouet topped Summit League Player of the Year Henestosa 6-4, 6-2, knotting the score at one point apiece, before Kiefer pushed IPFW back ahead with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.
A loss at No. 5 singles once again tied the score, before Miloslava Shustova needed just two sets to win at No. 4 singles by a 7-5, 6-4 score to put IPFW up 3-2. The No. 3 singles needed three sets before the Kangaroos prevailed, knotting the score at three wins apiece, and setting the stage for the Huck effort.
Huck took the opening set 6-3, before falling in a tiebreaker in set two 6-7 (4-7). The third set had center stage in its entirety, as it was the only remaining match being played. Huck jumped ahead 3-0 early, before Amsallem was able to get her first point, cutting the gap to two at 3-1.
The sophomore proceeded to win the next two points - taking the score to 5-1 - before UMKC was able to hold off the celebration for one set, but Huck closed the match and the Championship with a left-handed overhead winner.
The win improves IPFW's record to 23-7 on the season, and a remarkable 8-3 all-time in the Summit League Tournament.
The Mastodons will find their opponent on Tuesday, April 30 in a video streamed selection show at 5:30 p.m.
