FARGO, N.D. – IPFW took a 4-2 extra innings loss in game one, and the Bison pulled off a seventh inning 4-3 comeback win in game two at Newman Outdoor Field as North Dakota State goes up the in series 3-0.
The Bison took game one with a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Mastodons scored a run in the first inning and then sent the game into extra innings with a single run in the top of the seventh, but a two-run fifth inning along with the home run gave North Dakota State a 4-2 victory.
Evan VanSumeren led IPFW in game one with a 3-for-5 outing which included scoring a run. Tyler Shepherd scored the second run of the game for IPFW. He was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and catcher Caleb Fenimore also impacted the game going 2-for-3 from the plate.
VanSumeren led off the game with a double to right centerfield and he advanced to third after a single from Brandon Soat. The Bison quickly recorded two outs with runners on the corners and the inning ended with Soat in a rundown. Soat was eventually tagged out, but VanSumeren got home to give IPFW the 1-0 lead.
NDSU tied the game at 1-1 after a sacrifice fly from Satzinger, and the go ahead run came in after an IPFW throwing error.
The Bison took the lead despite only recording one hit in the inning as a fielding error put Leach on first base as the lead-off man and a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position. Colwell was intentionally walked and a single from Turbak moved each base runner into scoring position.
IPFW came up with a clutch run in the top of the seventh inning as game one was originally scheduled to end after seven. Shepherd sent a single up the middle and Caleb Fenimore followed with a double in the left field gap. Shepherd came around to score the game tying run, but IPFW couldn't break the tie as Kingsley ended the inning with a strikeout.
The game remained tied until the 10th inning when Skrbec blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left field to win the game.
Three student-athletes took the mound for IPFW in game one as Chuck Weaver got the start. Weaver took care of the first five innings, but was replaced by Travis Reboulet after giving up two runs in the fifth. Reboulet didn't allow a run in his three innings of work and he added a strikeout. The final Mastodon to enter the game for IPFW in game one was Connor Lawhead. Lawhead made it through 1.1 innings before the home run ended the game.
Game two got off to a slow start, but IPFW got on the scoreboard first with aggressive base running from Shepherd. The junior was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a balk. Shepherd swiped third base and came home on a single through the right side of the infield by Kendall Whitman.
The momentum shifted to the home team in the sixth inning as Satzinger hit a two-out home run down the left field line to tie the game, but Kevin Wirth answered for IPFW with a two-run shot in the top of the seventh to give IPFW the 3-1 edge.
The lead wouldn't hold up as NDSU scored three runs off four hits in the bottom of the inning. Kleinendorst came up with an RBI single against Connor McLaughlin and Colwell tied the game with an RBI single to left field off Kyle Sorensen. Hechtner delivered a single to right center that sent Kleinendorst home, winning the game for North Dakota State.
