Three Individuals and Two Doubles Pairs Earn Flight Titles

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Three IPFW individuals - Gerard Guell, Martin Muadi, and Jonathan Raa - earned Northern Kentucky Invitational Championships, whlle the doubles teams of Andres Cobos and Daniel Kang, and Raa and Karl Wangensten-Oye earned doubles championships at the opening tournament.
In all, IPFW went 15-4 in singles matches (.789 percent), and 6-1 (.857) in doubles play over the two days of competition.
Guell, who advanced to the finals in Flight Four after two straight-set wins, took the championship over Joel Stern of Southern Indiana by scores of 6-4, 6-1, earning a perfect 3-0 singles weekend.
In the fifth flight, Muadi - who needed a tiebreaker in each of his first two matches of the invitational - won in straight sets for the final over Aaron Barris of Southern Indiana 7-5, 6-3.
It was an IPFW/IPFW final in flight six, as Raa topped teammate Wangensten-Oye 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (0-8), giving IPFW its third individual title.
Along with Wangensten-Oye, earning a runner-up finish in the tournament was Cobos, who fell 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (0-6) in the third flight.
In doubles play, the flight No. 2 team of Kang and Cobos opened the competition in the semifinals, winning 8-6 over the team from Dayton, before topping the Northern Kentucky squad 8-4.
In the third flight, Raa and Wangenten-Oye combined to win 8-1 in the semifinals, before topping their competitors from Northern Kentucky 8-6 in the finals.
Connor Andrews and Muadi combined at the No. 1 flight and won 8-4 in the quarterfinals and 8-3 in the semifinals, before falling 8-4 in the championship match to the squad from Dayton.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette.
