Men's Tennis Shows Strong at Purdue Invite First Day

PURDUE DAY ONE RESULTS
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons went 6-2 in singles action, and 1-2 in doubles at the first day of the Purdue Fall Invitational.
The Mastodons went 4-0 through Flight A, B, and C, and 2-2 in Flights D and E. In doubles play, the Mastodons advanced one team to the second round via a bye; however, the 'Dons fell in two of the other three doubles results.
Daniel Kang, playing in the singles Flight A, topped Hamish Weerasinghe of Bradley by scores of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and will face Mark Kovacs of Purdue, the fourth-seeded singles player in the flight, Â tomorrow.
In Flight B, Jonathan Raa topped Thomas Gans of IUPUI 7-6 (4), 7-5, and will face Green Bay's Leo Gomez Islinger tomorrow for the right to advance to the third round.
Gerard Guell and Andres Cobos each won their matches in the Flight C. Guell won 6-4, 6-1 over Garrett Mandrell of Vincennes, and will see Iowa's Chase Tomlins in the second round. Cobos won 6-4, 6-4 in the first round over Roberto Mezo of Toledo, and will see Butler's Brandon Woods in the second round.
Karl Wangensten-Oye fell in the first round by scores of 7-6 (2), 6-3 to Lucas Dages of Purdue in Flight D, as Connor Andrews fell to Phil Gruber of Case Western by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Also in Flight D, Martin Muadi topped Dan Rodefeld of Bradley by scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and will face Marius Merz of Green Bay, who earned a bye into the second round. Playing from the consolation bracket, Wangensten-Oye will face Tim Corwin of DePaul, while Andrews will face off against Dan Hyman of Wright State.
In Flight E, Derek Romer defeated Anthony Stead of Chicago by scores of 6-3, 6-3, and will take on Eric Zishka of Washington (St. Louis) tomorrow afternoon.
Doubles play started with Kang and Cobos earning a first round bye, and will face off against Chicago's Sabada and Karandikar tomorrow morning. Also in "A" Flight was Muadi and Andrews, who fell 8-2 to Bush and Putterman of Washington (St. Louis), and will take on Silva and Medinilla of Purdue in the consolation round.
In the "B" Flight, Wangensten-Oye and Guell defeated the Washington (St. Louis) pair of Bouchillon and Skallerud by an 8-6 score, and will next take on Western Michigan's Mora and Phillips. In one of the tightest doubles matches of the first round, Romer and Raa fell 9-6 (6) to the Bradley tandem of Romanet and Rakitin.
Competition continues on Saturday in the second of three days of the invitational.
