Men's Tennis Drops First of Spring Season

MUNCIE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis squad dropped its 2014 spring opener as the team fell to the Ball State Cardinals by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon.
Ball State (2-0) opened the match by sweeping through the doubles matches. The Mastodon pair of Jonathan Raa and Karl Wangensten-Oye fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, before Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi were dropped 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, giving the Cardinals the doubles point. BSU closed out the doubles portion of the match with a 6-3 win over IPFW's No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos by a 6-3.
In singles action, Ball State took the first three results to claim the match win, as Patrick Elliott defeated Raa at No. 2 singles by a 6-0, 6-3 score. Ball State's Lucas Anderson toppled Guell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, before Patrick Downs won at No. 6 6-0, 6-3 over Wangensten-Oye to give the Cardinals the match.Â
Ray Leonard toppled IPFW's Kang at No. 1 singles by a 6-3, 6-5 score, before the Mastodons closed the match with two straight wins. The first Mastodon victory came via a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 win by Muadi over Andrew Stutz at No. 5 singles. Andres Cobos won the day's marathon-match over Austin Smith by a 6-5, 5-6, 10-7 final score.
The Mastodons return to action on January 24 when the team travels to DeKalb, Ill., to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies, and will face off at Chicago State and UIC a day later.
