Buzzer-Beater Drops Mastodons at Dartmouth
11/28/2014 6:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HANOVER, N.H. - A three-pointer as time expired from Dartmouth forward Connor Boehm gave the Big Green a 68-67 win over the IPFW Mastodons on Friday afternoon.
Steve Forbes led four Mastodons in double figure scoring with a season-high 19 points, as Joe Reed and Joe Edwards each scored 12 and Isaiah McCray 10. Reed pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double, while McCray and Jure Gunjina added seven boards. Reed also led the team with five assists in the losing effort.
The Mastodons (3-2), leading by one with nine seconds left in the game sank one of two free throw attempts to push the visitors' lead to two; however, it was Boehm's late-game heroics that gave the game its final score.
IPFW led by a 9-4 score three and a half minutes into the game, only to see the hosts rattle off 11 consecutive points to lead by six at 15-9.
After a Dartmouth (1-2) jumper gave the hosts a five-point lead with 12:59 to play, the Mastodon defense clinched its jaws, holding the Big Green without a point for the next nine minutes. Over that nine-minute span, IPFW scored 15 points, capped off by a Steve Forbes three-point play.
The large IPFW run put the Mastodons ahead by 10 with 3:57 to play, and the 'Dons led by nine with 1:58 remaining in the first half before the hosts scored six straight to close the halftime gap to three at 31-28.
The Mastodons kept their lead through the first four and a half minutes of the second half, before a 7-0 Dartmouth run turned a three-point advantage into a four-point deficit. The IPFW first-half deficit reached as many as six with 6:46 to play; however, six straight points on a pair of Reed free throws, a Gunjina running jumper, and a Mo Evans lay-in knotted the score at 55 apiece.
Down by four with 2:51 to play, Edwards scored seven consecutive IPFW points to close the gap to one at 65-64 with just under a minute to play.
After forcing a shot and miss on the defensive end, and coming up empty on a pair of free throws with 35 seconds to play, McCray picked up a steal at mid-court and slammed it home, giving IPFW a one-point lead with 21 seconds to play in the game.
The Mastodons once again got a missed shot on the defensive end, before making 1-of-2 free throws, putting the margin at 67-65, and setting up Boehm's late-game heroics.
IPFW hit 46.8% (22-of-47) of its shots from the field, but just 5-of-16 (31.3%) from long range and 60% (18-of-30) from the charity stripe. Dartmouth was 29-of-65 from the floor (44.6%), 7-of-16 (43.8%) from beyond the arc, and just 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the charity stripe.
Alex Mitola scored a game-high 21 points for the Big Green while Gabas Maldunas scored 18 and Boehm had 10 to go with his game-high 14 rebounds.
The Mastodons return to action on December 3 when the team faces off against the Stetson Hatters in a 7 p.m. tip-off in DeLand, Florida, a game that will be shown on ESPN3.
