12/8/2014 10:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - IPFW held Purdue to just 63 points on Monday night at Mackey Arena - the second-fewest that the team has given up all season; however, the Mastodon offense could not get its traction in a 63-43 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers in front of 10,007 fans.
Joe Edwards scored a team-high 12 points, hitting 5-of-11 shots from the field, while Steve Forbes added nine and Joe Reed seven. Mo Evans led the team with a career-high eight rebounds, with Forbes adding seven and Reed six, as Reed and Edwards tied for the team lead with three assists.
The 43 points are the fewest by the Mastodons in a game since January 24, 2013 when the team scored 40 in a 43-40 loss to Western Illinois. The team shot just 28.6% from the field (16-of-56), although 12 of the 16 baskets were assisted.
The Mastodons struck first with a three-pointer by Isaiah McCray on the team's first possession, but Purdue answered with eight straight points, and never trailed again.
Purdue used a 15-2 run in the middle of the first half to stretch to an 18-point lead, as the Boilermakers led by as many as 21 with 2:29 to play in the first half.
IPFW responded with a first-half-ending 5-0 run, and opened the second half on an 18-9 streak to cut the margin to just seven halfway through the second half. Purdue answered with an 11-2 run, and scored the final five points of the game to give the contest its 63-43 final margin.
A.J. Hammons and Kendall Stephens each scored 13 off of the bench for the Boilermakers, while Isaac Haas added 10. Hammons pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, while blocking five shots. Purdue went 25-of-58 from the floor (43.1%), and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from long range.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, December 11 when the team hosts the University of Michigan-Dearborn at the Gates Sports Center.
