Softball Takes Unblemished Record to Texas Tournament

AUSTIN, Texas - The IPFW softball team will take its perfect 4-0 record into Austin this weekend, as they compete in the Texas Classic along with Louisiana Tech and nationally ranked Kentucky.
ABOUT IPFW
IPFW heads into the weekend in Texas after tying the school record for best start, sweeping the field at the Hampton Inn of Dunn Invitational with wins over Valparaiso, Seton Hall, UMass-Lowell, and Campbell.
In the last game, a 5-0 win against Campbell, neither team could score in the game until the fourth inning, before the Mastodons tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth to secure the 5-0 win. Junior pitcher and defending Summit League Pitcher of the Week Miranda Kramer gave up one hit over seven innings of work, striking out 10 and walking four. Dani Pugh was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kayti Hanson - the Summit League Offensive Player of the Week - was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI.
Hanson is batting .667 on the season with eight hits in a dozen at-bats, scoring six times and driving in three runs. Larissa Franklin is 7-of-14 with four runs scored and four stolen bases, while Alex Bousquet (.429) and Pugh (.400) are at .400 or better on the year, as the team has a batting average of .361. Alex Bousquet and Pugh have eight and seven RBI's, each, while Pugh has the team's only home run.
Kramer was 2-0 with a save on the weekend, striking out 27 in 16 innings of work without allowing a run. She gave up three hits, and opponents are batting just .060 against her. Megan Flenniken started two games, going 2-0 in 10 innings of work with a 5.40 ERA, despite holding opposing batters to a .184 batting average.

Texas, currently ranked 15th in the country, comes into the game having dropped its last contest by a 4-2 score against Texas-San Antonio.
In the loss, the Longhorns scored twice in the first inning, but saw the Roadrunners score once in the fourth, twice in the fifth, and once in the sixth to secure the two-run victory. Holly Kern was 2-for-4 for the Longhorns, scoring one of the two runs, while Karina Scott also scored once. Gabby Smith picked up the loss in the circle going five innings and scattering four hits and giving up three runs, while striking out four and walking three.
This year Taylor Thom leads the team with a .478 batting average with 11 hits in 23 at-bats, scoring five times. She has stolen six bases, while knocking a home run and driving in six. Stephanie Ceo is also hitting above .400 at .429 with three runs scored and four RBI's in seven games. Erin Sireman (.294 average) and Lindsey Stephens (.292 average) are tied for the team lead with three home runs, as Stephens leads the team with eight RBI's. Brajae Washington (.269) is also tied for the team lead with six stolen bases, and leads the team with six runs scored.
Texas has three pitchers who have seen at least 10 innings of work, led by Kern who has pitched in 13.1 innings with a 1.58 ERA. She has struck out 10 batters while walking a dozen. Nationally ranked Kentucky comes into the game after sweeping through the Mizuno Invitatonal with wins over Santa Clara, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Oklahoma, and George Washington.
The most recent win, a 3-0 victory over George Washington, the Wildcats and Colonials played through four innings of scoreless softball before Kentucky squeezed across a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the 3-0 win. Griffin Joiner was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Ginny Carroll drove in a pair. Shannon Smith went the entire seven innings, scattering two hits and striking out nine without walking a batter.
Joiner leads the Wildcats - who are batting .338 as a team - with a .667 batting average with 10 hits in 15 at-bats en route to her being named the Louisivlle Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week. She added three home runs, two doubles and nine RBI's, and has a slugging percentage of 1.400. Ashley Smith was 7-for-15 in her opening weekend with four RBI's, as Christian Stokes batted .368 with three runs scored and four RBI's.
Kelsey Nunley pitched 17 of the team's 36 innings on the weekend, and went 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA. She ended with 19 strikeouts against just four walks, allowing four earned runs. Smith, Lauren Cumbess, and Meagan Prince each saw action in one game on the weekend, and each picking up a victory, with only Prince allowing a run on the weekend.
