AUSTIN, Texas - The IPFW softball team picked up its first-ever win over a ranked team as a member of NCAA Division I, winning 3-2 in eight innings over the No. 16 Texas Longhorns, after topping Louisiana Tech 7-2 earlier in the afternoon on the first day of the Texas Classic.
The wins improve IPFW to 6-0 on the season, the most consecutive wins to start a season in program history, and set up a meeting with seventh ranked Kentucky at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
In the game against Texas, the teams pitchers, IPFW's Miranda Kramer and Texas' Tiarra Davis dueled back and forth for the first five innings. Neither team could find any offensive rhythm early, until the Mastodons got a leadoff bunt single from Larissa Franklin to start a rally. She was moved to second on a groundout by Ashleigh Bousquet, and to third on a throwing error during Dani Pugh's at-bat. The next IPFW batter, Hillary Kartman, hit a fly ball to right field, just deep enough to allow Franklin to score and push the Mastodons ahead 1-0.
Texas would not waste any time in tying the score, as Lindsey Stephens reached on an error, and then scored on a throwing error, giving the Longhorns the tying run. Neither team could find the plate in the seventh inning, setting up the extra-inning heroics.
Alex Bousquet led off the eighth inning with a walk, was advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and then to third on a wild pitch. She scored when twin sister Ashleigh reached on a fielder's choice, before Dani Pugh drove in Franklin with a second straight fielder's choice.
In their half of the eighth inning, the Longhorns cut the gap in half with a double off the wall by Holly Kern that scored Brejae Washington, but back-to-back strikeouts by Kramer closed the door on the game.
Kramer struck out 12 in the contest, her third game this season with at least 10 strikeouts, as she scattered seven hits and walked two, still without allowing an earned run on the season in 26.2 innings of work. Franklin, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Hillary Kartman each had one hit for the Mastodons.
In the opener over Louisiana Tech, the Mastodons scored twice in the top of the third inning, the first on an Ashleigh Bousquet double that scored Franklin, and later a single by Caitlyn DeLong who singled home Ashleigh Bousquet.
The Lady Techsters tied the score after an outfield error saw two runs cross the plate, and the game remained tied through the top of the sixth inning.
In the sixth frame the Mastodons batted around, scoring five runs, the game-winning score coming on an Alex Bousquet single that scored DeLong. After IPFW loaded the bases, Ashleigh Bousquet drove in a run with an infield single, before Dani Pugh singled to right field, chasing home Franklin and Alex Bousquet. The final run was pushed across when Kartman singled in Ashleigh Bousquet, giving the game its 7-2 final score.
Ashleigh Bousquet went 2-for-3 in the game, while Kartman and DeLong each went 2-for-4. Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet each scored twice, with Pugh and Bousquet each driving in two. Kramer picked up the win, pitching the final 2.2 innings of the game, striking out six and walking two in a relief effort. Megan Flenniken started the game, going the first 4.1 innings of the game, striking out three and scattering four hits without allowing an earned run.
