AUSTIN, Texas - IPFW fell in a pair of games against nationally ranked teams at the Texas Classic, falling to eighth ranked Kentucky 2-1 in the first game of the day, before falling 10-2 to Texas.
Larissa Franklin went 3-for-5 on the day for the Mastodons, as the team's other five hits came from five different batters. Miranda Kramer and Megan Flenniken each picked up losses on the day.
In the opener on the day, the Mastodons (6-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on seventh ranked Kentucky when Franklin hit the first home run of her career over the right-center field wall two outs into the third inning.
The teams traded scoreless fourth innings before the Wildcats knotted the score in the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, before Kentucky provided the winning run - also on a solo home run - in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Mastodons threatened in the top of the seventh, putting the first two runners on base on a double and a hit by pitch, before the ranked Wildcats closed the door by forcing a pop-up, strikeout, and groundout.
Kramer gave up her first earned runs of the season against Kentucky, scattering five hits and striking out 11. Franklin was a perfect 3-for-3, scoring and driving in the team's only run of the game.
In a rematch with No. 15 Texas after knocking off the Longhorns a night earlier, Texas jumped out with a run in each of the first two innings of the game.
IPFW rallied with two runs in the top of the third inning, utilizing mistakes and timely hitting. Audrey Mintari reached on a throwing error by the Longhorn shortstop, before Kayti Hanson singled up the middle. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners ahead a base, before Franklin reached on a fielder's choice, pushing home pinch runner Beka Ferguson. Ashleigh Bousquet followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Hanson and knotting the score at two runs apiece.
Texas answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, before scoring three runs in the fourth, and three more in the bottom of the fifth to close the game after five innings by a 10-2 final score.
Hanson and Mintari had the team's only hits in the game. Flenniken picked up the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year, giving up six hits and five earned runs over three and a third inning of work. She struck out three and walked five in the loss.
The Mastodons return to action in a 1 p.m. consolation game against Louisiana Tech in the final game of the Texas Classic.
