Mastodons Split Valentine's Day Doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons split a pair of Valentine's Day tennis matches, falling in a hard-fought 4-3 contest against Toledo, and a 5-2 win over Bradley.
Against Toledo, the Mastodons struck first in doubles play, when Carlota Trevino and Ella Norgren won 8-6, before the IPFW pair of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato won 8-7 to pick up the doubles point.
Emily Mazzola won 6-2, 6-1 over Sofia Sorokina at No. 3 singles to knot the match score at 1-1, before the Rockets took a one-point lead after Katelyn Nguyen's 6-1, 6-3 win over Ella Norgren.
Mayu Sato remained undefeated in the spring with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win at No. 1, tying the match score at 2-2. The teams traded points, Toledo winning at No. 5 over Marcy Huck 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, before Trevino returned the favor in a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
With the match tied 3-3, Toledo picked up a marathon-match win at No. 4 singles, as Pia Rygh won 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) to win the match for the Rockets.
In the afternoon finale at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club, the Mastodons swept through No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, earning the team point. Huck and Sato won 8-2 at No. 1 pairs, before Emily Richardson and Shustova won 8-3 at No. 2.
The Mastodons took any suspense out of the afternoon match by winning the first three completed singles match-ups, started with Trevino's second singles win of the day by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Sato won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, before Shustova completed the Mastodon win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4. After an IPFW loss at No. 3 singles, Richardson gave the team its fifth and final points with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, February 15, when the squad hosts the Wright State Raiders in a 2 p.m. start.
