HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - For the second straight season the IPFW baseball team won their season opener, defeating Alabama A&M 5-2 before falling in the nightcap 5-1. It is the first time on record that the Mastodons have won their season opener in back-to-back seasons.
Kevin Wirth led IPFW at the plate going 3-for-6 with four RBI on the day. Tyler Shepherd collected three hits on the afternoon, two of which came in the second game, and stole two bases. Kristian Gayday, Carter DeBoe, Evan VanSumeren, and Shane Trevino each collected a pair of hits, with Trevino scoring three times and driving in a run.
As a team the IPFW defense did not commit an error on the day, but the offense stranded 14 runners.
In the opener, the 'Dons jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Wirth doubled to left field, driving in Steve Lowden and Trevino.
The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out single.
Again it would be Wirth coming through for IPFW, delivering a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Gayday to score from third.
A&M would cut the lead to one in the seventh with another two-out hit, a triple, to pull the score to 3-2.
IPFW would add a pair of insurance runs in the final two innings. Wirth continued to do it all for the 'Dons as he added an RBI single to left with two outs, scoring Trevino in the eighth. Then in the ninth, it would be Trevino with the single to left to drive in VanSumeren.
Conner Lawhead came on in the eighth, for the two-inning save, striking out four while allowing just a walk.
Brandon Pease picked up the game one win, lasting five innings on the mound, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five Bulldog batters.
The 'Dons kept the hitting going to start the second game as VanSumeren and DeBoe reached based before Whitman scored VanSumeren on an RBI ground out in the top of the first.
Unfortunately for the Mastodons, their bats went cold from there as they tallied just two hits in the final six innings. Alabama A&M scored two runs in the second on a two-run home run, two more in the fifth, before tacking on their final run in the sixth.
Steve Danielak took the loss for the 'Dons, lasting 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three Bulldogs.
The two teams will go right back at it tomorrow, February 16 for a pair of games beginning at noon (EST).
