Mastodons Split Doubleheader and win Home Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team split a mixed-location doubleheader on Saturday, falling 5-2 against Green Bay in Kalamazoo, Mich., before returning home for a 4-3 win over Wright State later in the afternoon.
Against Green Bay, the teams played the doubles point down to the wire. The Green Bay pair of Jorge Gonzalez and Rowan Isaaks won 6-2 over IPFW's Jonathan Raa and Connor Andrews at No. 3 doubles. The Mastodons returned the favor at No. 2 where Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi won 6-3 over Michael Tebon and Joey Leto.
The doubles point came down to No. 1, where IPFW's Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos battled the 40th ranked doubles team in the country of Michael Tenzer and Howard Scott, needing a tiebreaker before the ranked pair pulled out a 6-5 (7-2) victory, giving Green Bay the team point.
Guell opened play in the singles action with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Isaaks at No. 4, knotting the score at one point apiece. Gomez Islinger won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles over Raa, before the Mastodons once again evened the match with a 6-1, 6-2 Kang win at No. 1 singles.
The Phoenix followed with three straight wins to earn the match victory. Green Bay's Marius Merz won 6-4, 6-2 over Connor Andrews at No. 6 singles, before securing the match win with a 6-5 (8-6), 6-3 win by Leto over Cabos at No. 3 singles. The match closed with a Jorge Gonzalez Soler 6-5, 4-6, 10-5 win over Karl Wangensten-Oye at No. 5 singles.
Later that day back in Fort Wayne against Wright State, the Mastodons battled with two doubles matches needing a tiebreaker before IPFW eventually earned the team point. Wangensten-Oye and Raa won 6-2 over Dan Gilbert and Myles Harris at No. 3, the only doubles match that did not need a tiebreaker.
At No. 1, the pair of Hayden Joblin and Ricardo Pineda won 6-5 (7-4) over Kang and Cobos, putting the pressure on the No. 2 doubles match, where IPFW's Guell and Muadi won 6-5 (7-6) over Lauri Makkikalli and Michal Lyzwa.
The Raiders knotted the score at one point apiece with a 6-5, 6-1 win by Joblin over Raa at No. 2 singles. The teams traded points, IPFW winning 6-2, 6-3 by Muadi at No. 5 singles, before Makikalli won 6-3, 6-2 over Kang at No. 1.
Guell's 6-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles put IPFW ahead 3-2 until Gilbert won 6-5, 6-4 over Cobos at No. 3. With all eyes on the No. 6 singles court, Wangensten-Oye and Myles Harris needed a third set - the only third set match of the team competition - with Wangensten-Oye holding off his opponent 6-2, 5-6, 6-5.
The Mastodons return to action on February 21 when the team travels to eastern Ohio to face off in a pair of matches in Youngstown, Ohio - against Robert Morris and Youngstown State - before facing Cleveland State on Sunday, February 23.
