Late Comeback By Baseball Comes Up Just Short

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A ninth inning comeback came up just short for the IPFW baseball team as the Mastodons fell to Southeast Missouri State 7-6.

At the plate, eight IPFW starters collected at least one hit as Carter DeBoe and Greg Kaiser both had a pair of hits on the afternoon. DeBoe also scored twice while Steve Lowden and Kristian Gayday both drove in a pair of runs.

The Redhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the third with two outs on a two-run home run to right field.

Gayday answered for the 'Dons in the fifth as he belted a two-out two-run homer over the right field fence, scoring himself and Shane Trevino.

In the sixth, IPFW scored a pair of runs on back-to-back singles by Kevin Wirth and Lowden.

SEMO answered in the seventh, scoring five runs in the inning, all with two outs, taking a 7-4 lead.

The 'Dons began their rally in the eighth when DeBoe scored on an RBI groundout by Lowden.

Greg Kaiser led off the ninth inning with a single to center. One out later, Tyler Shepherd singled to left and Brandon Soat followed with a hit up the middle to score Kaiser. With runners on the corners, the next two Mastodon batters would be retired, ending the rally and the game.

On the mound, starter Steve Danielak earned a no decision after going four innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out three. Connor Lawhead suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering three earned runs in 1/3 an inning of work.

The final game of the three-game series will be tomorrow, February 23 with a 2 p.m. (EST) first pitch.
