MACON, Ga. - IPFW junior pitcher Miranda Kramer became the program's career strikeout leader, as the team swept a pair of games from tournament host Mercer and North Carolina Central. The Mastodons topped the Bears 5-2, while shutting out the Eagles 9-0 in five innings.
Kramer, now with 534 career strikeouts, passes former teammate Courtney Cronin for the top spot on the Mastodon strikeout list. She currently stands eighth in Summit League history in the category, just 18 strikeouts away from sixth place all-time in the league record books.
Against Mercer, the Mastodons struck first in the second inning when Audrey Mintari hit into an RBI groundout that scored Ashleigh Bousquet. In the fifth inning Larissa Franklin singled home pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott, putting IPFW ahead 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth the hosts got a one-out two-run single, tying the game at two runs apiece, and are the only runs allowed in the tournament by the IPFW pitching staff.
The Mastodons took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning when catcher Dani Pugh hit a two-out, three-run home run, putting IPFW ahead 5-2, the final margin of the contest.
Kramer went the entire seven innings, striking out 11 and walking four, while scattering four hits and allowing the two runs.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 3-for-4 on the day, while Hillary Kartman and Franklin were each 2-for-4. Each of the team's five runs came from different players, while Pugh led the team with three RBI's.
In the nightcap against North Carolina Central, Megan Flenniken and Kaitlyn Biere teamed up to throw a one-hitter against the Eagles, as the Mastodon bats erupted for 12 hits in 24 at-bats.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, Alex Bousquet and Franklin opened the bottom half of the inning with singles before Pugh slammed her third three-run home run in as many games, putting the hosts on the scoreboard ahead 3-0.
The floodgates opened for IPFW in the bottom of the third inning, as the team scored six runs on five hits, batting through the lineup, with Pugh picking up RBI's in two different at-bats in the frame. Pugh opened the scoring with an RBI single that scored Franklin, before Caitlyn DeLong singled with the bases loaded to score Pugh.
Emily Olszewski followed with a bases-loaded walk, before Kartman scored on an error by the Eagle pitcher, taking the score to 7-0 in favor of the Mastodons. Alex Bousquet drew the team's second bases-loaded walk of the inning, before Pugh followed after a pop-out, taking the score to 9-0 in the game.
In all, nine players had hits for IPFW, including the first career hits for Taylor Gordy Prescott and Becca Beier. Pugh and Kartman were a perfect 2-for-2, while Franklin was 2-for-3. Franklin and Pugh each scored twice, as Pugh drove in five.
Flenniken picked up the win, pitching the first three innings of the game, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Biere closed the door in the game, striking out two in two innings of work, without allowing a hit.
IPFW, now 12-5 on the year, will face off against tournament host Mercer in the championship game of the Mercer Classic.
