MACON, Ga. - The IPFW Mastodons went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, sweeping the field at the Mercer Bear Classic, winning the title, while improving to 13-5 on the season.
The Mastodons never trailed in the Classic finale, as IPFW scored the first runs of the game in the second inning when the Mastodons got a double from Ashleigh Bousquet, which was followed two batters later by a double from Beka Ferguson that scored Bousquet, putting IPFW ahead 1-0.
Mercer knotted the score in the top of the fourth inning; however, the Mastodons wasted no time in taking the lead back in the bottom half of the inning when Ashleigh Bousquet scored from second on a Mercer fielding error, putting IPFW ahead for good in the game.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-3 for the Mastodons, as the team's four other hits came from four different batters, while Bousquet scored each of the team's runs.
Megan Flenniken picked up the win in the circle, pitching the first five innings of the game, scattering five hits and striking out four while allowing the solitary run. Miranda Kramer came in and picked up her second save of the season, closing the door over the last two innings of the game, striking out two and giving up just one hit.
The Mastodons next take to Evansville, Ind., to compete in the Aces Invitational where the team will face off against Evansville and Murray State in a pair of games against each team.
