
Mastodon Softball Splits on First Day of Evansville Invite

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IPFW softball team split their games to open the Evansville Aces Invitational, topping host Evansville 7-1 before falling in a 1-0 pitcher's duel against Murray State.
Larissa Franklin was 5-for-8 at the plate in the day, while Caitlyn DeLong and Kelley Pevely were each 2-for-5. Franklin scored twice for the team, while Beka Ferguson drove in two runs.
In the opener, the Mastodons got on the board first in the third inning when Dani Pugh hit an RBI single - her 28th RBI of the season - driving home Franklin who opened the inning with an infield single and a stolen base.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Mastodon offense erupted with four runs in the fifth inning, as IPFW loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an error. Pevely singled home pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott, setting the stage for Ferguson, who hit a two-run double to left center field, driving in Ashleigh Bousquet and Hillary Kartman. Kayti Hanson drove in the inning's final run with a groundout, putting IPFW ahead 5-0.
Evansville got their only runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run; however, two IPFW runs followed in the top of the sixth started when Franklin scored on a fielding error. Kartman then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Alex Bousquet, giving the game its 7-2 final score.
Franklin was 3-for-5, while Pevely was 2-for-2, as DeLong and Hanson each had two hits. Miranda Kramer improved to 8-3 on the year striking out 11 in seven innings of work, walking two and scattering five hits.
In the nightcap, a shutout by the Racers, the Mastodons threatened in the bottom of the first inning with runners on first and second with no outs; however, a forceout, pop-out, and line-out ended the threat.
Murray State got the game's only run with a fifth-inning leadoff home run, one of four hits for the Racers.
Ashleigh Bousquet opened the bottom of the seventh with a double for the Mastodons, but a pair of groundouts and a strikeout ended the threat, securing the 1-0 Murray State win.
Franklin was 2-for-3 at the plate, as Ashleigh Bousquet had the team's other hit. Megan Flenniken picked up the hard-luck loss, scattering four hits and walking none, but the Mastodon offense was not able to overcome the solo home run.
The 'Dons return to action on Monday against both Murray State and Evansville in the second and final day of the Invitational.
