AUBURN, Ala. - The IPFW softball team split its opening games of the War Eagle Classic, hosted by Auburn, topping Savannah State 8-0 in five innings, before falling 10-0 to nationally ranked tournament host Auburn.
In the opener, Megan Flenniken was dominant in the circle, scattering just two hits and walking two in five innings of work, picking up her fourth shutout of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mastodons scored first in the second inning when Ashleigh Bousquet walked, and then scored following a series of miscues and a sacrifice fly. Bousquet advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, before moving to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Beka Ferguson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, providing the game-winning RBI.
In the third inning Alex Bousquet chased home Kayti Hanson and Larissa Franklin with a double, before scoring on a passed ball later in the inning.
Alex Bousquet drove in two more with a double an inning later, scoring Audrey Mintari and Hanson, before the game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ashleigh Bousquet scored on a wild pitch, before closing the game when Kayti Hanson drew a bases-loaded walk, pushing home the game-ending run.
The Mastodons made the most of their five hits - two from Alex Bousquet - as the senior shortstop drove in four runs. Ashleigh Bousquet and Kayti Hanson each scored twice - the latter without an official at-bat in the game.
Flenniken improved to 8-3 on the season, striking out three and allowing just four baserunners in the game. Her two hits allowed back in a back-to-back effort to lead off the fourth inning; however, neither would come around to score in the frame.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons fell victim to a strong pitching performance from Lexi Davis, who put together Auburn's second consecutive no-hitter of the evening (the Tigers no-hit Radford a game earlier). Two players - Franklin and Ferguson - reached base in the game, the former via a walk and the latter on a fielding error.
Auburn struck in the bottom of the first inning with a grand slam, and followed with a three-run and solo home run, putting the hosts ahead 8-0 after two innings. Two more runs followed in the third, giving the game its 10-0 final score.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Alabama A&M, and an 8:30 p.m. contest against the Ball State Cardinals.
