AUBURN, Ala. - The IPFW Mastodons swept through its opponents on the second of three days at the Auburn War Eagle Classic, winning 8-0 in six innings over Alabama A&M and 2-0 over Ball State.
Megan Flenniken and Miranda Kramer each kept her opponent off of the scoreboard, as the pair yielded just five hits over 13 innings, striking out 16 on the day. Dani Pugh went 3-for-6 in the two games with two RBI's, as Beka Ferguson and Alex Bousquet each went 2-for-6.
The pair of victories sent IPFW to 19-7 on the year, and set up a weekend-ending game against Radford on Sunday afternoon in each teams' final game of the War Eagle Classic hosted by Auburn.
The opening game started as a pitcher's duel, with neither team finding the scoreboard through the first three and a half innings, until the IPFW offense erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first - and game-winning - run came when Ferguson singled home Ashleigh Bousquet. A batter later, Caitlyn DeLong doubled home Ferguson and Hillary Kartman, taking the Mastodon lead to 3-0. Delong followed by scoring on an error, before Alex Bousquet doubled home Hanson, giving IPFW the five-run advantage.
Two runs in the fifth came when Kartman drove in herself and Pugh on a two-run home run, with the game ending an inning later when Pugh singled to left center field, scoring Audrey Mintari.
Flenniken went the entire six innings, improving to 9-3 on the season while striking out seven and scattering two hits. She walked none, and threw her third consecutive shutout, dropping her ERA to 1.59 on the season. Pugh was 2-for-3, while Kartman was 1-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
The pitching duel in the second game ran into the top of the sixth inning when the Mastodons put together a two-out rally when Kayti Hanson singled, stole second base, and advanced to third on an Alex Bousquet single. Larissa Franklin followed with a single to left field, scoring Hanson, as Pugh followed a batter later with a single that scored Bousquet.
The two runs would be more than enough for Kramer, who scattered three hits over seven innings of work while striking out nine, improving to 10-4 on the year.
Each of the team's five hits came from different batters, as Alex Bousquet, Franklin, Pugh, Ferguson, and Hanson each had hits in the game.
