INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The IPFW softball team opened Summit League play with a bang, sweeping the day against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits by scores of 8-0 and 5-1.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 5-for-7 on the day for the Mastodons with three runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles and a home run. Dani Pugh and Larissa Franklin were each 3-for-5, while Hillary Kartman was 2-for-6.
In the opener, Mastodon starter Miranda Kramer was stellar from beginning to end, striking out seven in the game while scattering two hits over five innings of work, while striking out seven.
IPFW wasted no time in the first game, as Ashleigh Bousquet opened the scoring with a double that chased home Franklin, before Kartman singled through the right side to score Pugh and Bousquet.
After two scoreless innings, the Mastodon offense erupted in the fourth inning. Kayti Hanson reached on a fielder's choice that scored Beka Ferguson, before Franklin singled home Hanson. Pugh followed with a two-run single, before Ashleigh Bousquet doubled to left field - her second double of the game - to push IPFW to an 8-0 lead.
With the eight-run mercy rule waiting, Kramer got a double play and a strikeout to end the game for her sixth shutout of the year, improving to 11-4 in the circle.
Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet each had two hits, while Pugh, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Kartman drove in a pair.
In the afternoon finale, IPFW once again struck early, with an Ashleigh Bousquet infield that chased home her twin sister Alex, before a Kartman double scored Ashleigh.
South Dakota State scored their only run of the day in the top of the fifth inning when Allison Huffman hit a solo home run down the left field line. After seeing the shutout hopes dashed, the Mastodons added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when Ashleigh Bousquet hit a three-run home run, giving the game its 5-1 final score.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap, as Dani Pugh was 2-for-4.Â
Flenniken gave up just four hits on the game, including a run, while striking out eight and walking none, improving to 10-3 on the season.
The Mastodons, now 21-7 on the year, return to action on Saturday afternoon for a series-ending third game in the League's opening weekend of play.
