Mastodons Sweep Opponents at Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IPFW women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon, winning 6-0 over Robert Morris, before topping the Penguins 4-2.
In the match against Robert Morris, the team's went straight into singles play, where the Mastodons swept through the competition. Mayu Sato won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, as Ella Norgren won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Sofia Sorokina did not allow her opponent to win a set, taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.Â
Miloslava Shustova won a marathon match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8, as Marcy Huck and Emily Richardson each on in straight sets, Huck by scores of 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Richardson by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
With the match already in hand, the teams decided to not compete in the doubles portion of the meet, giving IPFW the 6-0 win.
Later that afternoon, in their match with Youngstown State, the Penguins opened the match by taking the doubles point from the Mastodons. IPFW fell at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles; however, the pair of Carlota Trevino and Norgren won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Despite trailing 1-0 after the doubles play, IPFW fought back to win the match with wins at No. 1, 4, 5, and 6. Sato improved to 12-1 in the spring season with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 1.
Shustova won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, before Huck won in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Trevino's win at No. 6 singles by a 6-1, 7-5 score provided the final Mastodon win, as the match between Sofia Sorokina and Annina Brendel went unfinished.
The Mastodons return to action on March 9 when the team travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky University.
