FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons clawed their way to a 4-3 win on Friday evening against South Dakota State in the Mastodons' Summit League opener.
IPFW fought to the doubles point victory, before Karl Wangensten-Oye fought off a first set loss to sweep the last two sets in picking up the clinching victory at No. 6.
"This was a very good win today over a tough South Dakota State team," said coach Brett Barnett. "Our energy as a team was outstanding, especially in doubles. Dan (Kang) set the tone in singles with a quick win, and I could not be more proud of Gerard (Guell) and Karl (Wangensten-Oye) for fighting as hard as they did for their wins."
The Mastodons fought for the doubles point, as the No. 2 pair of Martin Muadi and Gerard Guell was the first to finish with an 8-3 score, before the doubles point was clinched with the win from Andres Cobos and Kang by an 8-4 score at No. 1 doubles.
Kang quickly dispatched of his opponent at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-3) to put IPFW ahead 2-0, before the Jackrabbits evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2.
Knotted for the first time in the match, the Mastodons responded with a 6-3, 6-3 win by Guell at No. 3 singles, as Wangensten-Oye was able to provide the deciding points in the match for the Mastodons. Wangensten-Oye rebounded after falling 6-2 in the opening set to close the match with identical 6-2 scores to send the Mastodons to their first conference win of the season.
The squad returns to action on Sunday, March 23, when the team plays host to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois.
