
Baseball Scores Big In Sweep Of Holy Cross

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The IPFW baseball team had a big night as the Mastodons combined to score 30 runs in their sweep over Holy Cross (IN) 17-5 and 13-0. The pair of victories extend IPFW's win streak to four games.
Malcolm White led the 'Dons (9-16 overall) on the day going 6-for-8 at the plate, including a triple and a home run, while scoring five runs and driving in five RBI. Carter DeBoe hit for the cycle in game one, finishing the day 4-for-8 with seven RBI and three runs. DeBoe is the first IPFW player to hit for the cycle since former Mastodon Jordan Kohler accomplished the feat at Centenary on April 24, 2009.
Kristian Gayday was a fan of the number four, collecting four hits, four RBI and scored four runs. In all, eight different Mastodon players collected multiple hits and six players drove in two or more runs.
DeBoe got the scoring started for the 'Dons in the first, driving a 0-1 pitch over the right field wall, a two-run home run. With two outs in the second inning, DeBoe check the triple off his list, allowing Caleb Fenimore to score from first.
IPFW added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Shepherd and DeBoe came one step closer to completing the cycle when he delivered a three-run double to right center.
In the fourth inning White connected on his first home run of the season for the 'Dons, a three-run blast to left field.
The Saints plated four runs in the fifth inning on a single and a three-run triple.
IPFW scored five more runs in the top of the fifth as Trevino drove in two runs on a single and Kristian Gayday followed with a two-run triple. Gayday then came home on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Wirth.
Holy Cross capped off its scoring with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, DeBoe complete the cycle on a single with the bases loaded to bring home a run. Jon Timmermen drove in the final run of the game with a two-out bases loaded walk.
Game one starting pitcher Steve Danielak earned his first win of the season, allowing four runs and six hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The nightcap saw the 'Dons score six runs in the second inning, five of which came with two outs. With one out, Steve Lowden singled home a run and Lucas Salerno brought home another run on a sacrifice fly. One out later, White drove in a pair of Mastodon runs on a triple and Brandon Soat followed with an RBI double. After walks to DeBoe and Trevino loaded the bases, Gayday brought home a run on a walk.
In the fourth inning, Gayday scored Soat on a two-out single. After a double by Wirth, a Holy Cross error on a Greg Kaiser grounder allowed Gayday to score.
The Mastodons capped of the night scoring three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, a single by Trevino plated a run and after a Saints error loaded the bases, a walk by Wirth scored another run. Kaiser followed with a three-run double to left center for the final runs of the game.
Starter Nate White earned his first win of the season, pitching six scoreless innings, striking out eight Saints and scattering four hits.
IPFW will take a day off before returning to the field on April 1 to host Butler for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
