FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team won its record-breaking 13th match of the season on Tuesday evening in a split of its afternoon's matches. The Mastodons fell in a hard-fought 5-2 match with the Valparaiso Crusaders before returning to pick up a 6-1 win over Grace in the evening finale.
In the opener against Valparaiso, the Crusaders won the hard-fought doubles point by the narrowest of margins. IPFW took the first match in the doubles portion, when Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos won 8-7 at No. 1 pairs. The Crusaders fought back to win 8-7 at No. 2, and then by an identical score at No. 3.
Moving into singles, the Crusaders jumped ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. The Mastodons rebounded with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Karl Wangengsten-Oye at No. 6 singles, before Gerard Guell brought home a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, tying the match score at two points apiece.
The remaining three singles matches needed three sets; however, the Mastodons narrowly fell in each, as Cobos fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2, before Daniel Kang fell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1. The final Valparaiso win came at No. 4, where Martin Muadi fell by nearly the slimmest of margins, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
IPFW had a short amount of rest between sets, as the Mastodons battled with the Grace Lancers just over a half hour later. Despite playing on weary legs, the Mastodons swept the doubles portion, opening with an 8-1 win by Connor Andrews and Wangensten-Oye at No. 3. Kang and Cobos won 8-3 at No. 1, before Guell and Muadi picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Wangensten-Oye and Muadi picked up the first two wins of the singles portion, Wangensten-Oye by a 6-1, 6-0 score at No. 6, as Muadi won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Grace's only win came next at No. 1 singles, before Guell (6-2, 6-1), Andrews (6-2, 6-1), and Cobos (6-3, 6-1) won at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 2, respectively in straight sets.
The Mastodons get a small break before returning to action on Friday, April 4, when the team faces off against the Omaha Mavericks, as the team will look to improve on its 3-0 Summit League record.
