Mastodons Fall In Game One, Game Two Suspended

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW baseball team dropped game one of its doubleheader to Western Illinois 3-0, while game two was suspended due to darkness. That game will resume tomorrow, April 13, at 11 a.m. with WIU coming to bat in the top of the ninth, leading 8-7.
In the opener, the Mastodons were shut out for just the second time this season, despite matching the Leathernecks with five hits in the game. Brandon Soat was the lone IPFW player with two hits in the game, going 2-for-2.
Western Illinois scored the only runs it needed in the fifth on a triple followed by a single to take a 2-0 lead. WIU added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
IPFW's best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh as the Mastodons had a pair of runners on the corners, but were unable to push across a run.
Ryan Wells took the loss for the Thunder, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight Leathernecks.
In the suspended game two, WIU opening with three runs in the top of the first off IPFW starter Dane Davis. The Leathernecks added a run on a solo blast in the third.
Soat put IPFW on the board with its first run of the day on an RBI double to left center in the third.
Steve Lowden cut the deficit to two in the fourth inning on a two-out, RBI double to right center.
IPFW took the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs on two hits, all with two outs. After walks to Carter DeBoe and Shane Trevino, Kristian Gayday delivered an RBI bloop single down the right field line. Trevino came home on a wild pitch and a two-run home run off the bat of Kevin Wirth, his second of the year, capped off the inning.
In the sixth, Lowden connected on his first home run of the season, giving the 'Dons a 7-4 lead.
The Leathernecks answered with four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to regain the lead before play was suspended after the eighth inning.
