Baseball Earns Split With Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The IPFW baseball team earned a split with South Dakota State, falling in game one 2-1 before coming back in the nightcap to win 9-5. Despite suffering their first Summit League loss, the Mastodons (13-17/5-1) remain in first place, one game ahead of Western Illinois.
IPFW was led at the dish by Evan VanSumeren who went 5-for-6 with two runs scored. In game two, Malcolm White was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Kevin Wirth was 3-for-5. Shane Trevino and Carter DeBoe each collected two hits and two RBI on the day.
In the opener, the lone IPFW run came in the third inning on an RBI double by Trevino that scored DeBoe.
SDSU scored a run in the third and the game-winner in the fourth on an IPFW error.
Nate White took the loss on the mound despite throwing complete game three-hitter, striking out three batters.
The IPFW offense didn't waste any time in game two, jumping out to the early lead, scoring a run in the first on an RBI single by DeBoe. The Mastodons extended their lead in the third inning, scoring three runs on a groundout by Trevino and hits by Kristian Gayday and Greg Kaiser.
South Dakota State answered with two in the fourth inning, both coming with two outs.
The 'Dons added a run in the fifth on a double by Wirth and another in the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of White. In the bottom of the sixth, the Jackrabbits scored twice to pull the score to within two, 6-4. IPFW's Cody O'Neal came on to record the final out of the inning, escaping further damage as SDSU left the bases loaded.
IPFW tacked on two more runs in the eight and another in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the first two batters for SDSU reached base, but Connor Lawhead came on to strike out the next three batters, ending the Jackrabbit threat and secure his fifth save of the season.
Kyle Sorensen picked up his first win of the season, pitching 1.2 innings of relief.
IPFW returns to action at home on April 12 for a doubleheader with Western Illinois beginning at 2 p.m.
