INDIANAPOLIS - Behind a win and a save from Miranda Kramer, and a 5-for-6 effort at the plate from senior Alex Bousquet, the Mastodons took the first two of a three-game series with the IUPUI Jaguars, winning the opener 2-0 before taking the second game 7-5.
Alex Bousquet drove in two while walking once and moving a runner along with a sacrifice bunt. Hillary Kartman scored twice while going 4-for-8 at the plate, driving home two. Dani Pugh drove in three runners on a game-two home run, as the nine runs of the day were scored by eight different batters.
Kramer struck out 15 on the day in seven and a third inning of work, while Kaitlyn Biere picked up the team's other win, pitching 4.2 innings in relief, striking out four and giving up one earned run.
With the 15 strikeouts and the shutout, Kramer set IPFW single-season records in each, breaking the previous record of shutouts set by Courtney Cronin in 2010, while her 286 strikeouts this season are two better than her total from a year ago.
In the opener, Kramer was spectacular, allowing just one hit on a sixth-inning infield single, while striking out 15.
IPFW got the eventual game-winning run in the top of the second inning when Caitlyn DeLong hit a solo home run to center field, putting IPFW ahead 1-0.
The margin doubled in the fifth frame when Prestlee Cooper singled through the left side of the infield, chasing home Kartman.
Alex Bousquet was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game, while Kartman was 2-for-4. Kramer improved to 18-8 on the year, as she walked one and hit two batters in all, with the Jaguars hitters going just 1-for-20 in the game.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons got a three-run home run from Pugh in the first inning, which was immediately followed by a solo home run by Kartman, putting the Mastodons ahead 4-0, a lead that the team would not give up again in the game.
A two-run home run by Alex Bousquet in the second inning pushed the Mastodons to a 6-0 lead, before the Jaguars scored for the first time on the day with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Kartman drove in pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott in the top of the fifth, before IUPUI picked up a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, before loading the bases with two outs before Kramer came in to shut the door for her third save of the season.
Alex Bousquet was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kartman and Ashleigh Bousquet were each 2-for-4. Pugh drove in three, all on her three-run home run in the first inning.
Biere pitched 4.2 innings in relief in picking up the victory, striking out four, while Kramer got her only batter to pop-out to the middle of the infield for her third save of the year.
The teams return to action for the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
